One year ago today, on March 22, 2024, I launched Transvitae.com with a dream: to create a space for the transgender community that was built by us, for us. A place where trans individuals, their families, and allies could turn for trustworthy news, vital information, and affirming resources. A year later, I am overwhelmed by the growth, the support, and the stories that have emerged from this labor of love.
Since launch day, over 99,000 people have visited Transvitae. That number astonishes me. When I first envisioned this project, I knew there was a need, but I never imagined how quickly this site would become a hub for so many. Every day, I receive messages from transgender individuals who tell me that something they read on Transvitae helped them feel seen. Parents of trans kids reach out, grateful to have found guidance and reassurance. Allies write to say they’ve learned something new. These messages, coupled with the steady growth of the site, fill my heart with gratitude and reaffirm my purpose.
A Year of Impact: What Our Readers Care About Most
Looking back on our most-read stories, the trends are clear—our community is hungry for information, empowerment, and representation.
- News & Politics: Legislative battles over transgender rights dominated the headlines, with thousands of readers seeking updates on state-level bans, federal policies, and court rulings. From Texas’ attempt to ban gender-affirming care for all ages to Iowa’s proposed restrictions on trans people in public spaces, these issues remain top of mind for many in our community.
- Beauty & Grooming: Articles on makeup, hairstyles, and personal styling were widely read, reinforcing how important gender-affirming aesthetics are in our journeys. Guides on contouring and face shapes helped readers find confidence in their reflections.
- Medical Transition: From maximizing breast growth on HRT to understanding progesterone and spironolactone, medical transition remains a crucial topic. Many of these articles stemmed from my own research when I began transitioning, and I’m honored that they’ve helped so many others on the same path.
- Community & Tragedies: Sadly, some of our most viewed stories were about violence against our community. The tragic losses we’ve covered remind us why visibility and advocacy are so necessary.
- Fashion & Style: Navigating clothing sizes, choosing the right glasses frames, and perfecting a wardrobe for self-expression are everyday concerns that our readers have embraced. The response to these articles shows just how essential fashion can be in affirming identity.
- Fitness & Health: Whether it’s achieving a more feminine silhouette, optimizing workouts for a transitioning body, or maintaining wellness, fitness is an area that many trans individuals engage with as part of their journey.
A Personal Anniversary & The Journey Ahead
This milestone carries even deeper significance for me because March 22 isn’t just the anniversary of Transvitae—it’s also the anniversary of the day I started HRT. Two years into my medical transition, I’ve had my share of ups and downs, but like this website, I persist. Many of the articles I’ve written or commissioned have come from my own research as I sought to understand what changes I might experience, what hurdles I might face, and what victories I might celebrate. If the information I’ve gathered for myself has helped even one person feel more prepared or less alone, then this journey has been worth it.
Of course, running a site like Transvitae isn’t without its challenges. Writing about anti-trans legislation and the epidemic of violence against our community is emotionally draining. Some days, the news is so heavy that I wonder how much more I can take. But then, I receive another email from a trans teen who feels less alone because of this site, or from a mother who now understands her child a little better. That support, along with the undeniable growth of our readership, fuels me to keep going.
A Special Thank You to Diane
No reflection on this past year would be complete without acknowledging my best friend, Diane. From the moment I first shared my idea for Transvitae, she believed in me. She encouraged me when I doubted myself, cheered me on as the site grew, and reminded me why this work matters. Diane, your support has been invaluable. I don’t know if Transvitae would exist without you—but I do know that I wouldn’t be standing as strong as I am today without your unwavering belief in me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Moving Forward: Refusing to Be Silenced
Despite all the love and support, there have been haters. The trans community, especially those of us who speak out, are no strangers to harassment. But let me be clear: I refuse to be bullied into silence. If anything, the negativity only makes me more determined to keep this platform alive and thriving. There is a huge need for a space where trans individuals can hear about the topics that affect us—from a voice within the community, from someone who has walked in these shoes or, at the very least, done the work to understand what to expect.
The first year of Transvitae has been an incredible journey, and it’s just the beginning. To every reader, every supporter, and yes, even the detractors who remind me why this work is necessary—I appreciate you. Thank you for making this website a success. Here’s to many more years of education, empowerment, and community.
With love and gratitude,
Bricki
